Deadly Dog Attacks on Horses

  1. December 30, 2013: A miniature horse in Rearview FL USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bull mixes.
    Incident: Two dogs described as "pit bull mixes" attacked the horse after digging under a guard fence, severely injuring the horse, which had to be put down.

  2. February 10, 2014: A miniature horse named Little Ed in Yuba City CA USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: The horse was found mauled and mangled in his stall. A trapper confirmed the dog attack, and followed the dogs' tracks to a nearby property where the dogs' owner surrendered the two dogs, which were covered in dried blood.

  3. February 18, 2014: A miniature horse named Splash in Fayetteville NC USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Two pit bulls ripped the flesh of a horse's face. Due to the extent of his injuries, a vet had to immediately euthanize the horse. The dog's owners came and picked up the two blood-covered dogs and took them home.

  4. June 26, 2014: Two miniature horses in Tuscaloosa County AL USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Two pit bulls attacked a man's herd of six miniature horses, killing one and mortally wounding a second. The horse's owner shot the wounded horse to put it out of its misery. When the pit bulls went after him, he shot them.
    Dog(s): The two dogs were killed.
    Owner(s): The dogs' owner was identified and charged with permitting dogs to run at large, which is a $25 fine.

  5. July 10, 2014: Three miniature horses in Aiken SC USA died because of an attack by loose dogs.
    Incident: One morning Muffy Seaton found her miniature horses laying in the pasture; their throats had been ripped out, and their ears had been chewed off. Though it couldn't be proven which dogs did the killing, particular local dogs had been witnessed in the area chasing livestock on several occasions.

  6. January 31, 2015: A miniature donkey named Little Eeyore in Turtle WI USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Two pit bulls travelled two miles from their home and attacked a miniature donkey, tearing it to shreds. The donkey died three days later because wounds to its mouth kept it from eating or drinking.
    Dog(s): The dogs were seized but later returned to family of the dog's owner.
    Owner(s): Roseann Samuel had been previously cited for allowing her dogs to roam loose. Deputies called Samuel to have her pick up her dogs, and when she arrived they arrested her for failing to pay previous fines and for the new charges of dogs causing damage. She was cited for dogs running at large, untagged dogs, and not having proof of rabies vaccination for one of the dogs.

  7. February 3, 2015: A miniature horse named Piper in Columbia County FL USA died because of an attack by 3 Pit bulls.
    Incident: The horse died the day after suffering severe injuries to the eyes and throat from being attacked by three pit bulls. One of the three dogs was captured.

  8. March 11, 2015: A mare named Princess in La Pine OR USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: The dogs escaped their fenced area and entered a fenced pasture and a attacked a horse. The horse's owner shot and killed one dog and scared off the other. The mare had to be euthanized because of her injuries.

  9. October 4, 2015: Two miniature horses in Alachua County FL USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Two pit bulls attacked a group of miniature horses, severely injuring several, and mortally wounding two. One dog owner was identified.

  10. January 14, 2016: A Shetland Pony named Remy in Flagler County FL USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: The pony's owner came upon the dogs attacking the pony and tried to get the dogs to stop. That failing, he shot both dogs, killing one and mortally wounding the other. The dogs had torn away the pony's muzzle.
    Dog(s): The dogs had come on the property the prior week and the dog's owner was notified to fetch his dogs. After the killing, the dog's owner tried to say that one of the pit bulls wasn't his, but that was proven false.
    Owner(s): Duane Weeks, the dog's owner, agreed to pay $1,000 restitution to the pony's owner and a $40 fine for allowing his dogs to run at large.

  11. December 19, 2016: A miniature horse named Teddy in Lake Helen FL USA died because of an attack by loose dogs.
    Incident: The pony's whole muzzle and face was ripped to shreds. Despite veterinary care, he passed away a week later. Penny, a full-sized horse, received bites to her front leg and back legs in the attack.

  12. December 15, 2017: Three miniature horses in Butler County OH USA died because of an attack by 3 pit bull or pit bull mix dogs.
    Incident: A horse owner encountered three dogs killing one of his horses and he shot and killed one. The other two dogs ran off. His second horse was dead: basically eviscerated, stomach torn open, flank was torn open, eyelids torn off. Two hours later the remaining two dogs attacked again. A miniature horse and donkey were attacked; the horse had to be euthanized from its injuries.

  13. October 2, 2018: Four miniature horses and a cat in Coweta County GA USA died because of an attack by 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: A woman tried to beat the pit bull off the horse with a rake. It ran off, but not before it had attacked four miniature horses and mauled a cat. A vet euthanized all five animals. Shortly afterwards, the pit bull ripped to shreds a golf cart trying to attack several cats.

  14. December 6, 2018: A horse in Yakima County WA USA died because of an attack by 4 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Two horses were attacked by the neighbor's four pit bull dogs. One horse sustained injuries, the other was killed. Photos show the horse's throat ripped out and its legs mangled. A Facebook post gives details and shows photos of the scene. The horse's owner says the dogs were on top of the horse when he arrived. He got his gun but he was more preoccupied with getting the horse off the ground so she wouldn't be eaten. He said, though, the horse's two front feet were broke off.
    Dog(s): The dogs had attacked the horses the prior year and the owner said it wouldn't happen again. This time, the dog's owner put down the dogs and agreed to pay for the surviving horse's vet bills.

  15. February 2019: Two ponies and a goat in Aiken SC USA died because of an attack by 3 Pit bulls.
    Incident: In February 2019, the Baughmans came home to find their two ponies and a goat mauled to death, and their cat missing. There were three blood-covered pit bulls running around on their property belonging to a neighbor. Other neighbors had reported the same dogs prior to this incident. Then on December 5, 2019 the Baughmans came home to another attack. The dogs' owner was present and had restrained two of the dogs, but the third was still attacking their animals.
    Dog(s): The dogs were seized and later surrendered by the owner. The dogs were to be re-adopted out of state. The owners of the victim-animals were told they had to swab their dead animals' wounds for DNA, then were later told that DNA testing was too expensive and wouldn't be performed.
    Owner(s): Geana Hill claims her loose dogs didn't attack the animals, and claimed it was coyotes. She was cited with three counts of animal nuisance and three counts of failure to vaccinate. The victim-family was told that since no one had witnessed the dogs killing the animals, not much more could be done.

  16. April 9, 2019: Two miniature horses in Livingston Parish LA USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Two pit bulls had been terrorizing a neighborhood, attacking people and horses. In a third attack by the same two pit bulls belonging to a neighbor, two miniature horses (Milkshake and Majora) lost their lives. After a court hearing ordered the dogs euthanized, their owner Shane Nobles went on the run with the dogs. An arrest warrant was issued for Nobles.

  17. October 2019: A miniature horse named Coco Puff in Windsor SC USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bull mixes.
    Incident: A 12-year-old miniature driving horse named Coco Puff was brutally mauled to death by two pit bull dogs. They also charged the horse's owner, who hid inside her truck (taking photographs) until the dogs left the area by jumping over the paddock fence.
    Dog(s): The dogs were surrendered by their owner. Earlier that month, several other people had reported the same dogs being agressive towards livestock and people, but responding officers would not seize the dogs at that time.
    Owner(s): Jesus Moreno Negrete (whose property was not fenced, allowing the dogs to roam freely) pleaded guilty to three counts of animals creating a nuisance and was ordered to pay fines totalling $2,287.50. The owner of the horse was told she would have to file a civil case for restitution for the value of the pony, lost income from potential boarding clients who didn't want to board their horses in the wake of the incident, and the cost of a necropsy on the horse.

  18. October 14, 2019: Two miniature horses in Valley Springs CA USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Robert Hughes opened his back door to find two pit bulls calmly licking blood off themselves, one horse dead and the other mortally wounded. The two hour attack was captured on surveillance video.
    Dog(s): The dogs were seized by Stockton Animal Services but later returned to the owners because the ordinances required proof that the dogs had been involved in another incident involving the attacking of animals. "This is the first documented incident regarding either of these dogs and does not meet the legal standard for Animal Services to file a ‘potentially dangerous dog’ petition under state law."
    Owner(s): Raymond Carringer fled with the dogs to Stockton, but was found and arrested for felony probation violation. The dogs were seized at that time.

  19. October 18, 2019: A pony named Angus in Osceola County FL USA died because of an attack by 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Dogs attacked a small pony named Angus, and ripped half its face off. The pony was euthanized to end its suffering.
    Dog(s): The dogs were seized by Animal Control. If the owner failed to claim the dogs within three days, they were to be put down.

  20. November 25, 2019: A pony named Gracie in Lake Helen FL USA died because of an attack by 2 dogs, a German Shepherd and a white dog.
    Incident: A neighbor's dog ripped through the wire fencing and gained access to the pasture, killing Gracie by ripping out her throat. Penny, a full-sized horse, received cuts to her legs and chest. In December 2016, this same family had another miniature horse killed by neighboring dogs, and Penny was also attacked by the dogs at that time.

  21. December 24, 2019: A Hackney show pony in Union Township PA USA died because of an attack by 4 dogs.
    Incident: Dean McCray failed to secure his four "dangerous" dogs and they killed a horse. The horse's owner encountered the four dogs in the act, they had the pony by the throat, and he shot and killed three of the dogs. The fourth dog escaped. McCray was arrested for several warrants inluding multiple prior dog law violations.
