2015 Dog Bite Related Fatalities

  1. 01/07/15 Eugene Smith, 87, of Frederick MD USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was attacked by the family pit bull while taking down his Christmas tree. The dog was still viciously attacking him when law enforcement and animal control arrived. Victim was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
    Dog(s): The victim and his adult son had adopted the neutered male pit bull seven months before. The dog was euthanized. It was 84 pounds and 4 or 5 years old and used to sleep with the victim in his bed.

  2. 01/19/15 Declan Moss, 1.5, of Brooksville FL USA died from 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: The victim was playing on his family's porch when the family's two dogs attacked. The grandfather tried, but was unable to pull the dogs off the boy, or each other. Victim was dead by the time the ambulance arrived.
    Dog(s): Max and Thumper, two male pit bull mixes 18 months and 6 years respectively, had played with the victim many times before and supposedly never shown any aggression to humans but had killed small smaller dogs before. The dogs were seized by animal control.
    Owner(s): Gregory Moss, victim's grandfather.

  3. 01/22/15 Malaki Mildward, 7, of College Springs IA USA died from 2 Pit bull mixes.
    Incident: The boy was attacked in his own yard by two of the family's young dogs he'd known since they were born. His stepfather was inside the house, unawares, and his mother and others were away. When the mother and others returned, they discovered the attack.
    Dog(s): The attacking dogs were littermates (bred by the victim's parents) about 8 or 9 months old and weighed 25#(F) and 35#(M). They were euthanized along with their dam (who had bitten a 10 year old boy previously), but the family chose to keep the sire of the attacking dogs.
    Owner(s): Mother and stepfather of the victim.

  4. 02/04/15 Fredrick Crutchfield, 63, of Coal Hill AR USA died from 3 Undisclosed.
    Incident: Found dead by a family member in the woods near his home. Died of exsanguination from dog bites. The victim knew the dogs. The police did not release the number of dogs, their breed, or the owner's name.
    Dog(s): The dogs were impounded.
    Owner(s): Family member, name undisclosed.

  5. 02/22/15 TayLynn DeVaughn, 2, of West Mifflin PA USA died from 1 Pit bull mix.
    Incident: At her aunt's house, victim was attacked and killed by a family dog. She died from injuries to the head and neck. The father said "I came out of the kitchen and the dog dropped the baby. His name was Jake and my baby was gone."
    Dog(s): Animal Control impounded Jake, the 3 to 4 year old pit bull-mix that weighs about 80 pound, and it was expected to be euthanized after a 10-day quarantine. The AC officer said Jake tried to attack him when they got to the kennels, was aggressive and uncooperative the night of the attack but had been somewhat withdrawn since. "The dog is still doing the thousand-mile stare. This dog is odd."
    Owner(s): The victim's aunt's boyfriend.

  6. 03/08/15 Roy Higgenbotham Jr., 63, of Ohio County WV USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was killed while trying to revive his roommate, the dog's owner, from a heart attack by slapping his face. Police arrived during the attack and a woman who witnessed the attack was found hiding from the dog on the roof. The dog was not registered with the city, despite ordinance requiring all pit bulls in the city be registered. Both men were pronounced dead at a local hospital. Victim died from a severed radial artery.
    Dog(s): Sheba, a female pit bull, was sent to South Hills Pet Rescue and Rehabilitation Resort, located in Union Township, Pennsylvania.
    Owner(s): Victim's roommate, George Wallace.

  7. 03/12/15 Betty Wood, 78, of Sulphur Springs TX USA died from 1 Rottweiler.
    Incident: Found dead in her home where she lived alone, by her daughter, investigators concluded she had been killed by her dog.
    Dog(s): The dog was owned by the victim for the previous five years, was surrendered by family members, and euthanized.
    Owner(s): Victim.

  8. 03/14/15 Julia Charging Whirlwind, 49, of Rosebud Indian Reservation SD USA died from 3 reservation dogs.
    Incident: The woman was attacked early in the morning near her property while she was out walking. The sheriff arrived and found two people trying to fight off the dog. The victim had 5 children and had spoken with her friend before about the problem dogs.
    Dog(s): The arriving sheriff shot two of the dogs. The third dog fled but was later captured and put down.
    Owner(s): Two separate neighbors.
    Further: Tribal council members rounded up a few dozen dogs and put them down (including the third attacking dog). There had been a serious aggressive dog problem in the area. They also discussed short and long term strategies to improve animal control on the reservation.

  9. 03/21/15 De'Trick Johnson, 38, of Jefferson County AR USA died from 8 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Victim arrived at an auto shop for a car repair appointment. When he exited his vehicle, seven dogs escaped under the shop gate and attacked him. He ran and got on the roof of his car, but the dogs also got onto the car.
    Dog(s): Five dogs were shot and killed, 3 more were seized. The dogs had attacked several people previously. One man had to climb a tree to escape. The dog owner's son said there were multiple attack victims from these dogs, and family members had warned his father to "get rid of those dogs".
    Owner(s): John Chester Smith, 63, the owner of C.J.'s Garage and the pack of pit bulls, was charged with felony manslaughter, a Class D felony. Prosecutors had evidence there had been four previous serious incidents involving Smith's dogs. Smith pleaded no contest to a felony charge in exchange for a 3-year prison term.

  10. 03/31/15 Neta Lee Adams, 81, of Washington GA USA died from Unknown Unknown.
    Incident: The woman's body was found in a ditch and autopsy determined she had died from a dog attack. According to the sheriff, there was evidence of a struggle on the ground, with broken yard furniture and scratches, blood, and clothing on the ground."
    Dog(s): The dogs were never found/identified.
    Owner(s): Unknown.
    Further: After this mauling death, the sheriff's department and local authorities aggressively responded to all dog calls, hoping to locate the attackers.

  11. 04/14/15 Kenneth Ford, 79, of Pahrump NV USA died from 3 Pit bulls.
    Incident: The victim went to his neighbor's two-home property to feed his cats when a tenant's three dogs jumped the six foot fence and attacked him. Two men ran to help the screaming victim and the dogs attacked them. The men were able to drag the victim next door and close the gate, but the pit bulls found a hole in the fence and resumed the attack. The dogs had chewed off the victim's left hand and his face, leaving an eye hanging out. One of the men got a gun and shot two of the three pit bulls, but the dogs continued attacking, undeterred, until police and EMS arrived, at which point the dogs fled. Authorities arrested the dogs' owner immediately. The victim was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition and died a month later. Both assisting men were seriously injured; one spent 23 days in hospital.
    Dog(s): The three dogs were caught and put down. The dogs had a history of aggression and being at large.
    Owner(s): Ricky Davidson, 40, tenant of the neighbor's house, pleaded guilty to one count of reckless endangerment, a gross misdemeanor. Davidson was sentenced to 364 days in jail in connection to the death of Kenneth Ford. The sentence also included other dog-related and drug-related charges against Davidson that were bundled together in plea negotiations.

  12. 04/19/15 Brayden Lamar Wilson, 10 weeks, of Dallas TX USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was killed by his family's dog. The child was sitting in a bouncing seat while the father stepped outside to turn on the sprinklers. When he returned, the dog was attacking in the infant. As the father tried to get the dog off the child, the mother walked in on the scene and was bitten as she tried to intervene. The father dragged the dog outside and shot the dog twice, killing it.
    Dog(s): The dog was shot and killed by the father. It had been in the family for 8 years, growing up with the two older children, 8 & 11.
    Owner(s): The victim's parents.

  13. 05/02/15 Gaege Anthony Ramirez, 7, of Canyon Lake TX USA died from 5 Unspecified.
    Incident: The victim and his mother had just arrived at a home to visit friends, when victim went into the backyard. A short time later, his mother found him with severe lacerations. Victim was airlifted to hospital where he died of his injuries.
    Dog(s): 5 dogs.
    Owner(s): Family friend.

  14. 05/24/15 Anthony Wind, 26, of Rochester NY USA died from 1 Rottweiler.
    Incident: Victim was mauled to death by his girlfriend's dog which allegedly assisted the victim when he had epileptic seizures. The dog, however, had previously attacked the victim four times, injuring both ears. Three of those incidents were reported.
    Dog(s): The dog had been adopted from Rochester Animal Services (previously from a Georgia shelter). This dog had previously attacked Anthony four times; both of his ears had been mauled in separate incidents, three of the incidents were reported to the authorities.
    Owner(s): Victim's girlfriend.

  15. 05/25/15 James Nevils III, 5, of Chicago IL USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was killed by a dog during a visit to his cousin's home. The cousin was not at home at the time of the attack. The dog latched onto the victim's throat and the victim's mother dragged the dog and child outside to get help. Several witnesses intervened and beat the dog with sticks and bricks and also stabbed it, trying to get the dog to let go of the boy. Once the dog let go, they beat the dog to death.
    Dog(s): The dog was beaten to death during the incident.
    Owner(s): Victim's cousin. He was later cited for not having the dog inoculated for rabies and not having a city license. The victim's grandfather was incensed that he was only charged with two minor infractions.

  16. 06/28/15 Jordan Collins-Tyson, 3, of Lawton OK USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was at his great-grandmother's house and was playing in the back yard where there were two dogs. The babysitter was watching him through the window. One moment he was fine, the next he was on the ground. The dog had fatally bitten the little boy's throat. The child had been around the dog before without any problems.
    Dog(s): Police shot the dog on scene who continued to act aggressive after they arrived.
    Owner(s): Unknown.

  17. 07/02/15 Norberto Legarda, 83, of Pecos TX USA died from 3 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Victim was killed by three dogs belonging to his daughter's next door neighbor while feeding his daughter's Labrador Retriever. The neighbor's dogs somehow entered into the backyard and began attacking victim and the labrador. When police arrived, the dogs were still attacking the labrador and a man was lying in the backyard. Police pepper sprayed and tasered the pit bulls to reach the injured man. Victim was pronounced dead.
    Dog(s): The dogs' owner gave consent to have all three of his dogs put down. The labrador survived its injuries.

  18. 07/07/15 Joshua Strother, 6, of Hendersonville NC USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was attacked when he climbed the fence to enter his neighbor's yard. He had been climbing over the fence to visit the dog since its arrival, as well to play with his neighbor's young daughter. At the time of the attack, Joshua was home with his mother who was 8-months pregnant. "I went to the bathroom and my boy is dead," she told 911 dispatchers.
    Dog(s): The pit bull was so aggressive, arriving deputies had to shoot and kill the dog. The neutered male pit bull had been adopted from Asheville Humane Society (AHS) three weeks earlier, previously transfered from Buncombe County shelter, which AHS operates, as a stray with an unknown history.
    Owner(s): Neighbor of the victim.
    Further: After the boy's death, Buncombe County officials ordered a moratorium on pit bull "transfers" from the county to AHS and all adoption agencies while they reviewed AHS's temperament test procedures and transfer process. The moratorium was lifted a week later citing that AHS was doing the "industry standard, best practice model for an open admission shelter."

  19. 07/12/15 Annie Williams, 71, of Shaker Heights OH USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was attacked and killed by a dog as she exited her parked car to pick up her great granddaughters. The dog was sitting on the front stoop of its home. One neighbor who ran to her aid shot the dog causing it to flee into the backyard. Another neighbor, who witnessed the attack from her window, said the horrific onslaught lasted 10-minutes. The victim was rushed to hospital where she died from bite wounds and crushing injuries to her neck, throat and body.
    Dog(s): Arriving police officers found the pit bull in the backyard and shot it to death.
    Owner(s): Leon Morton and Bobbie Green. Seven months after the attack, Leon Morton, 49, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 30-months in prison. Bobbie Green, 71, took a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to negligent homicide, a misdemeanor. She was sentenced to 6-months in prison, suspended with 2-years probation. Part of Green's probation includes not owning or caring for any dog.
    Further: Family members hope to make legislative changes in pit bull ownership. "We're all going to be very proactive in making sure that what happened to our grandmother does not continue to happen to other people," Tequila said. "What does it take for legislation, for representatives, for the law to see that this is an animal that no matter how kind you are to it, it cannot be controlled?" Williams was the 5th person killed by a pit bull in Ohio in the three years since the state dropped its pit bull law in 2012.

  20. 07/24/15 Carolyn Lamp, 67, of Redbird OK USA died from 4 dogs (3 Pit bulls + 1 Rottweiler).
    Incident: The victim was killed by up to four dogs. Witnesses said she was walking down South Main Street in the small town of Redbird when the animals attacked. One man chased the dogs away, but it was too late. The dogs attacked the woman's face and ripped off all of her clothing. Witnesses said she was left unrecognizable. She died on scene.
    Dog(s): Authorities seized and quarantined all four dogs.
    Owner(s): Unknown.

  21. 08/22/15 Porsche Cartee, 25, of Spartanburg SC USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was killed by her own dog when she tried to rescue her mother who was first attacked. The dog also attacked victim's sister. The mother was hospitalized with serious injuries; the sister was treated on scene. Animal control director desribed the scene as horrific.
    Dog(s): Spike was a male pit bull and had been with the family for 10 years. It tested negative for rabies. Victim's boyfriend said the dog had been aggressive for years and was a contention in their relationship and victim's relationship with her family. The dog had a history of violence including attacking victim's mother just two months earlier.
    Owner(s): Victim.

  22. 08/24/15 Cathy H. Wheatcraft, 48, of Davie County, NC USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was killed by her neighbor's pit bull when she went to her mailbox. A neighbor (who also owns three pit bulls) came to her aid, but the dog attacked her, too. The neighbor tried to jump into a car for protection, but the dog latched onto her arm and began dragging her out. When police arrived, the dog was actively attacking the neighbor, and the victim was dead. An officer dispatched the pit bull by firing three bullets into it.
    Dog(s): Shot to death by police at the scene. The dog, named Patch, had escaped its home by jumping out of a window 10 feet off the ground when the owner was not home. A few months earlier, it had been declared a nuisance for escaping its property and attacking another dog.
    Owner(s): Latisha Young was charged with failure to have her dog vaccinated for rabies.

  23. 09/04/15 Barbara McCormick, 65, of Autauga County AL USA died from 3 dogs (1 Pit bull mix + 1 Shepherd mix + 1 Retriever mix).
    Incident: Victim was mauled to death by her pet dogs. When she was found, two dogs were off of their leashes, and one was tied up. It was speculated that the dogs may have gotten into a fight during feeding, and she may have tried to break up the fight. Autopsy confirmed victim died due to the dog attack.
    Dog(s): The three dogs were quarantined.
    Owner(s): Victim.

  24. 09/08/15 Emilio Rios, 65, of North Shore CA USA died from 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Victim was outside watering plants when he was attacked by the dogs. The dogs also attacked a woman trying to aid him, leaving her in hospital with major injuries. The dogs fled when police drove directly towards the woman with lights and sirens on, and were later captured at a nearby residence.
    Dog(s): The two pit bulls were seized. Both were tranquillized after one of them was extremely aggressive toward animal control. The dogs were ultimately identified as strays.
    Owner(s): Unknown.

  25. 09/22/15 Carmen Reigada, 91, of Miami-Dade County FL USA died from 3 dogs (1 American Bulldog mix + 1 Rhodesian Ridgeback mix + 1 Lab-Shepherd mix).
    Incident: The woman was found in her home in a pool of blood, missing the skin off of her scalp and most of her face, with bites on her head, neck, arms and legs. A forensic dentist matched the mouths of all three of the household dogs to the bite marks. The autopsy report said victim died of dog bites to the head, neck and extremities; that the victim had a defleshed face and scalp; and that the victim suffered multiple rib fractures, lacerations to her liver and lungs, and contusions to her liver, lungs and heart.
    Dog(s): Miami-Dade Animal Services seized the three dogs: Bear,an American bulldog mix; Jack, a Rhodesian ridgeback mix, Marli, a labrador-shepherd mix. The were ordered euthanized at a dangerous dog hearing.
    Owner(s): Christopher Cifuentes, the victim's great grandson, had been fighting to get his dogs returned to him.

  26. 09/28/15 Lamarkus Hicks, 2, of Baker Heights WV USA died from 1 Pit bull mix.
    Incident: Victim was attacked and killed by a chained dog after wandering into his neighbor's unfenced backyard. He had been playing with several other children inside and outside a cluster of nearby homes when the 2-year old slipped away. He was discovered badly injured by the dog's owner.Victim was attacked and killed by a chained dog after wandering into his neighbor's unfenced backyard.     Dog(s): The dog, 1 year old Bubba, was surrendered for euthanisia. The owners also surrendered the attacking dog's dam to the shelter for possible rehoming.
    Owner(s): Joseph Creamer and Debra Snow were backyard breeders of pit bulls. No criminal charges were brought.

  27. 10/18/15 Edgar Brown, 60, of Oklahoma City OK USA died from 5 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Victim was attacked by five dogs when he went to a friend's rental home to take out the trash. The pit bulls jumped their fence and charged him. He tried to hold a gate closed, blocking the dogs, but the dogs found a hole in the fence and resumed their attack. While hospitalized, victim's condition deteriorated. In addition to suffering a heart attack, doctors were forced to amputate both of his legs and part of one arm due to infection. He died twelve days after the attack.
    Dog(s): All five dogs were euthanized.
    Owner(s): Juan Marcos Diaz, 46, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to one year in prison and three years probation.
    Further: The victim's estate won a $15M civil case against the dogs' owner.

  28. 10/18/15 Amiyah Dunston, 9, of Elmont NY USA died from 1 Pit bull.
    Incident: Victim was attacked while playing with two other girls in the backyard of her biological father's home. When police arrived, the pit bull was still engaged in its assault - the dog latched onto her neck and head, and fiercely shook her. Victim died at hospital with bite wounds all over her body.
    Dog(s): Kane, a 2 year old male pit bull, was shot and killed by responding officers.
    Owner(s): Carlyle Arnold, 29, a tenant on the property, was arrested at the scene for an unrelated charge.

  29. 10/18/15 Tanner Smith, 5, of Vidor TX USA died from 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Victim and his mother were visiting a friend's home. Tanner was jumping on a trampoline in the fenced-in yard when one of the pit bulls ran into the home covered in blood. Victim's mother rushed outside and found her son critically injured. The dogs attacked his face and neck, severing his carotid artery. Ashley believed the dogs' owner was with her son while playing outside, but he was not present during the attack.
    Dog(s): The owner shot and killed both dogs once he learned what happened. In 2014, the same dogs attacked a neighbor's puppy, and in February 2015, the dogs escaped their property and attacked a 9-year old girl and her mother. The girl's injuries were not considered severe enough by authorities to deem the dogs "dangerous."
    Owner(s): Father of the family friend.

  30. 11/12/15 Anthony Riggs, 57, of Madison County TN USA died from 1 Rottweiler.
    Incident: Victim was attacked and killed by a dog he had adopted just a few hours earlier from his local shelter. After leaving the shelter, he took the dog to show it to his son. About 3-hours later, His wife called him. With no answer, she arrived home with a co-worker and found her husband dead on the floor. The dog then attacked the wife and her co-worker, biting them both.
    Dog(s): The 5 year old Rottweiler was shot and killed on scene by Sheriff's deputies after it ran out of the house. Rabies Control had picked up the dog 5-days earlier as a stray with an unknown history. The county agency has no evaluation or temperament testing policy before placing a dog up for adoption to the public.
    Owner(s): Victim.

  31. 11/15/15 Carter Hartle, 11 months, of Oneida County NY USA died from 1 Pit bull-Sharpei mix.
    Incident: Victim was was killed by the family pit bull while he and his three sisters, ages 7, 10 and 12, were playing with the dog in the living room. The mother had turned her back momentarily then heard screams from her children. When she saw the dog attacking her baby, she tried to get it to release its jaws, then called 911. The baby was rushed to hospital where he died due to facial and neck injuries.
    Dog(s): Diesel, the family dog, was seized, quarantined, and euthanized at the family's request. It had not shown aggression since joining the family 2-years prior as a puppy.

  32. 12/02/15 Xavier Strickland, 4, of Detroit MI USA died from 4 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Victim was killed by four pit bulls as he walked down a residential sidewalk with his mother when multiple pit bulls escaped under their owner's gate, snatched the boy from his mother's arms, dragged him across the street then yanked him back under the gate and disemboweled him. His mother witnessed his brutal murder and was also severely injured by one of the dogs while trying to save her son.
    Dog(s): A responding police officer open fire, killing three of the pit bulls. The fourth was confiscated and later destroyed. The dogs had a history of escaping their owner's property. Neighbors say the dogs routinely escaped the property and terrorized locals.
    Owner(s): Geneke Antonio Lyons, 41. Five days later, he was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and possessing dangerous animals causing death. Bond was set at $1 Million.
    Further: The boy's parents filed two lawsuits against the dogs' owner and the property owner. The newspapers published editorials asking the city to once again examine Detroit's enduring pit bull problem.

  33. 12/03/15 Rebecca Hardy, 22, of Port Huron MI USA died from 2 dogs (1 Pit bull + 1 Husky).
    Incident: The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. A witness said he saw the victim put one leg over the decrepit fence of a neighbor's property, and while still on the fence the pit bull grabbed her leg, pulled her over, and began attacking her. Then a white husky in the yard also started attacking the victim. The owner came out and beat the pit bull with a 2-by-4, ending the attack. An investigation revealed that the victim knew the dogs were dangerous.
    Dog(s): Both dogs were destroyed, along with several puppies from their mating.
    Owner(s): Andrew Scott Miller and Jessica Rae Johnson were charged with having unlicensed dogs, a misdemeanor which carries a 90-day sentence and/or a $500 fine.

  34. 12/04/15 Werner Vogt, 85, of Rogersville MO USA died from 4 Boxers.
    Incident: Victim was out riding his bicycle and was later found critically injured and barely conscious on the side of the road. Authorities had thought he was attacked by a large wild animal. Hospitalized, and after emerging from unconsciousness after multiple surgeries, he told authorities he was attacked by a pack of dogs. He died several weeks later from his injuries.
    Dog(s): DNA results linked all four of boxers to the mauling death. By the time investigators wanted to take DNA samples from the dogs, the owner had given one away through Craigslist and another was dropped at a county shelter. The latter dog was a perfect DNA match to saliva found on the victim's clothes.
    Owner(s): Joseph Brink and his wife Lindsay Brink. Two years after the attack, a grand jury indicted the Brinks on second-degree manslaughter, stating they were aware of the aggressive disposition of the dogs and failed to maintain adequate control of the dogs by allowing them to run at large.
    Further: In August 2017, the Brinks agreed to a $300,000 settlement after the victim's son filed a wrongful-death civil lawsuit.

  35. 12/16/15 Maria Torres, 57, of Gridley CA USA died from 2 Pit bulls.
    Incident: Deputies found victim's body when they arrived for a welfare check because she didn't report to work that day. She had been mauled by her two pet dogs, presumably while trying to break up a fight between them. Both dogs had injuries consistent with a recent dog fight
    Dog(s): Two unneutered male pit bulls, 3 and 5 years old. The dogs were surrendered by family members and euthanized.
    Owner(s): Victim.

  36. 12/20/15 Nyjah Espinosa, 23 months, of Miami FL USA died from 1 American Bulldog mix.
    Incident: The girl was visiting her father at his home when his 95 pound dog attacked her in the hallway. The girl's grandmother called the dog a pit bull on social media, but Animal Services said it was an American Bulldog mix. Miami-Dade County prohibits pit bulls.
    Dog(s): Unknown.
    Owner(s): Victim's father.
